Bottle Boat Design Floris Hovers by Goods
The Bottle Boat is a Design by Floris Hovers for the Dutch design Label Goods. This is how he came to the idea: “I was on holiday in France once, camping alongside a small river. I crafted a small boat from litter – a plastic bottle, a little plastic bag and some twigs. A few children were playing close by and I let my craft work drift in their direction. Soon enough the kids noticed the little boat and they ended up playing with it for the rest of the day. They even took the boat to their tent to play with it again the next day.” When a few years later his daughters were amused by an empty shampoo bottle while taking a bath, Floris Hovers saw the possibilities to combine one with the other. “You can throw out an empty shampoo bottle, or you can, by a simple addition, create a ‘real’ boat.”
The Bottle Boat pakkage contents: 1 rubber band, 1 sail, 1 wooden boom and 2 wooden sticks. The sails are available in: orange, white, blue and red. The products for the Bottle Boat set are produced in the Netherlands.
Floris Hovers (1976) graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2004. In 2006, he started his own design studio. Hovers strives for work that is not complex in nature, but is still capable to incite surprise and sympathy. Hovers’ designs have a recognition factor because they refer to times past and are almost iconic. This way, Hovers’ products often explain themselves as to how they were made. The ‘readability’ is of essential importance for his designs. Hovers mostly produces his designs himself, and he cherishes the entire process from idea to end product while doing this. In a sense, he sees the designer as a craftsman who can produce their own designs and is not dependent on someone else in that respect. Consequently, he often initiates his own projects to be self-sufficient.
The Bottle Boat, from Hovers and added to the Goods collection in 2011, was selected for the cover of the book ‘Think Dutch’ in 2013, a great accomplishment. This co-publication from Frame Publishers and Daab Media discusses conceptual architecture and design in the Netherlands and describes 456 projects and products which are developed by the most creative minds of our time. These projects and products impressively present new insights and future-oriented visions.
